Skylions Studios

A media company is judged on production values within seconds, so the site had to show the work rather than describe it.

The brief

Skylions Studios is a Zimbabwe-based media company producing film, video and advertising, including Afro-futuristic science fiction. They came to us wanting a site that could carry that range without fragmenting into unrelated parts.

The bar is unusual in this sector. A brand deciding whether to commission a production company forms a judgement about production values within a few seconds of landing, and forms it from the site itself — before watching a single frame. A well-written page describing excellent work loses to a page that simply shows it.

The portfolio is a horizontal reel of video rather than a grid of stills, and sits high on the page.

Our approach

The work goes first and everything else defers to it. Video thumbnails run as a horizontal reel high on the page, sized to be watched rather than scanned, with a downloadable PDF portfolio for the procurement conversations that happen off the site.

Around that we kept the structure blunt. Services are four plainly-named offers — events coverage, graphic ads and branding, B2B marketing, influencer marketing — because a brand arriving with a budget wants to know in one screen whether Skylions does the thing they need.

The influencer roster is treated as its own proposition rather than an about-page footnote. It is a distinct reason to hire them, and the audience for it is not the same as the audience for a production quote, so it gets its own space and its own call to action.

Four offers, named plainly, so a brand can place itself without reading a paragraph.

What we built

A site built to carry moving image first, with the commercial routes kept short.

  • Video-led portfolio carousel with a downloadable PDF portfolio
  • Four-part services architecture aimed at commissioning brands
  • Influencer roster presented as a standalone proposition
  • Product and partner sections for distribution work
  • Social routes to YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and LinkedIn
  • Dark art direction sized to make video the brightest thing on screen
  • Responsive layouts that keep the reel watchable on mobile

Results

Skylions now has a site that demonstrates rather than asserts. The production work, the distribution arm and the influencer roster read as three sides of one company instead of three businesses sharing a domain, and a brand can get from landing to showreel without being asked to read first.
